Monday August 4th 1890

Opening of our Sisters Home by Mrs S Cowlishaw at 3 oclock in the afternoon; then tea at the Hall, after that the Dedicatory Service

Tuesday 5th Aug.

Spent the morning at home, In the Afternoon (by the kind invitation of Mrs Vickery) even visited with nine in company with Mr & Mrs Taylor then Blue Ribbon Army Rescue Home

Wednesday 6th Aug

Took a young girl to Mrs Marsh’s Rescue Home. In the afternoon attended Mothers meeting

Thursday 7th

This is our first day at Mission work, I visited in company with Sister Athius thirty one homes, we read & prayed in

many, some promised to come to our Services, distributed 30 tracts

Friday 8th

Made 13 visits, visited a patient in Hospital, Dist 18 Tracts

Sunday 10th

S. School in afternoon, & Junior class after, twenty boys & girls present.

Monday 11th

Visited 24 homes, gave away 26 tracts

Tuesday 12th

Made our first weekly meeting in Mr Taylor’s offices, I felt it to be a very strengthening [indecipherable], visited Morecliff Hospital 24 homes, tracts 20.

Wednesday 13th

12 visits, 15 tracts, attended Mothers meeting, visited a sick woman

Called on two poor woman

at Darlinghurst, found them in great need, gave them some bread & meat, Then visited a sick woman. In the afternoon went to Sydney Hospital

13 visits, this was a blessed day, three woman were deeply anxious about their souls salvation, they each promised to come to the services, Dis. 12 tracts

Attended weekly meeting called on the Hon E. Vickery for a parcel of tracts, sat for an hour with a sick woman, made seven

Wednesday 20th

5 visits, attended Mothers meeting, held Junior class.

Thursday 21st

6 visits, 2 sick children, visited Sydney Hospital

Friday 22nd

Sat with a sick woman (Mrs Green) Then made seven visits Went with a poor woman to the Police Station to see if we could find any news of her husband who had been missing for more than a week.

Five persons were present at the service in Princes St who promised us they would go.

Visited a convert, then spent the rest of the day in visiting the parents of the Junior Class.

9 visits, attended Mothers meeting, Junior Class, Visited a sick child & sat for an hour with the poor woman who was in trouble about her missing husband.

Thursday 28th

After visiting a sick person I went again in search of news of the husband, but to no avail, further than her is supposed to have ship to some foreign parts. Visited Sydney

Attending to home duties, In the evening Sis Gannon & I took a young woman to the Salvation Army Rescue Homes.

Visited Morecliff Hospital Made 5 visits. God greatly blest me while visiting one poor woman accepted that Saviour who died, her soul to redeem, she wishes us to pray for her husband, that he may also be lead to Jesus.

On my way to my district I meet a poor woman; was made rather an exciting conversion. She told me she was a clergyman’s daughter, drink had been her downfall & she learnt to drink & [indecipherable] at her own father’s table. I tried to persuade her to lead a different life, but she said she was determined to go her own way. After leaving her I visited five homes. & then went to get a little [indecipherable] for a poor woman. Attended Young Womens Prayer Union in the afternoon.

During the past fortnight I have felt very weak bodily & have had to rest a little; but I thank God that while not able to go out & work he has been very precious to me at home, & has strengthened me in my weakness.

During the week I visited one hundred & ten homes. Two women professed to find Christ in their homes & one took the Pledge

A great deal of my time was spent in visiting the converts Our meetings right through the weeks were well attended We should liked to have seen more coming out for Jesus; Many were convinced but would not yield. Altogether we had not more than twelve or fourteen who professed to obtain Pardon.

Upon returning home on Monday, I visited with Sis Athius eighteen homes.

who was quite overcome with bodily weakness & could not get on any further, but had dropped down in the street. Upon talking to her I found that she was trying to get to the steamer, I persuaded her to let me help her, & taking her things & letting her lean on my arm I got her to the boat The poor old thing scarcly knew how to express her thanks. In the afternoon I visited Sydney Hospital

Went to see the mother of a little boy who was hurt in our Boys Club. I have made 5

Called to see a sick man After Sunday School, I then went to fetch a woman to church who had promised to come during the week. While at church she was lead to see what a miserable sinner she was, but she did not yield that night

This has been one of my happiest days at visiting The woman who came to Church with me the previous Sunday evening had been thinking over what she had heard their & was very much troubled, she had given away greatly to the drink & I found her very anxious to give it up, after taking & praying with her, she decided to take the pledge, (Also her sister who was staying with her) Poor women, they have seen better days, she told me that she had one sister who was a

good Christian woman & worked a great deal among the poor, she had often pleaded hard for them; But they would not listen to her now she would not have anything to do with them I could not help feeling (more than ever I felt before what a terrible thing sin is. I had been asked to go & see a poor woman who was in great trouble, over a daughter who had run away from her home, I found her as I had heard & after trying to comfort her & promising to do all I could to help find her daughter I left. In visiting the hospital in the afternoon I was very much blest

On leaving one of the Wards a poor, sick man called me back, & said “You have prayer meetings in your Hall have you not? I want to ask for your prayers, that I may be able to keep loving my Saviour, I feel it very hard sometimes & I think I will lose my hold of Christ. Do ask them to pray for me.

Spent most of the day in trying to find traces of the young girl, but could not succeed.

On returning home from the evening service, found an old women in the

Part drunk, & singing to the top of her voice to the amusement of a number of men, after talking to her kindly, persuaded her to let us take her to her home.

Monday 1st December

Visited Morecliff Hospital the remainder of the day was spent in folding Gazetts.

Weekly meeting, 4 visits Attended Cottage Meeting

Sis Gannon & I took a poor woman to the Prince Alfred Hospital then attended Mothers Meeting & held Junior Class.

Friday 5th In starting out this morning I went first to see the mother of this young girl who had left her home. She had heard nothing more of her. I then called on a poor mother who had first lost her little baby & I helped her in preparing for the funeral. In the afternoon we held our first open-air service. Before going out Mr Taylor had us all in his office for a few minutes prayer We went out in much fear & trembling, but looking to Jesus Not many came round our ring but numbers stood at the doors & windows. At the close we were asked to go & see a poor woman who had been a missionary for a great many years, she heard us singing in the lane & sent

for us to come in to her We sang a number of hymns & after praying with her left with the promise to come again

Saturday 6th
Sunday 7th Gave my first address at Prince[indecipherable]

Monday 8th After visiting the Eye Hospital & spending a very happy time with the patients, who look with great delight for Monday morning to come I visited four homes.

Tuesday 9th Council morning & committee meeting to arrange about the Breakfast for the poor. Conducted cottage meeting & visited 7 homes

Wednesday 10th Played for Mrs Hutchinson at the service at Morecliff Hos. I then visited three homes. & went again inquiring for the missing young girl Attended Mother meeting

& held Junior Class, On returning home in the evening a person met me & told me of a poor woman who was dyeing of consumption, & the family starving for bread After tea I went to see her & found them without a crust of bread & the poor woman lying upon rags. No one to do anything for her, after doing what I could for her & getting the children food left her going again early the next morning.

Thursday 11th Found the woman very low, gave her a good wash, she told me she had not been washed for five or six weeks. Went collecting for our poor breakfast, then spent the remainder of the day with the sick woman

cleaning her room &c. Helped with the Seamans tea in the evening

Friday 12th Did a few hours collecting for the Breakfast, Lead the open air meeting in Clarence Lane, then sat with the sick woman again

Saturday 13th With the woman from seven oclock in the morning till nearly dinner time Went again in the evening & found her sin being very fast, a day or two ago she was much afraid to die her cry was, Pls if I were only ready. This night while singing & praying with her she was enabled to [indecipherable] put her whole trust in Jesus the change was very great I sat up all night with her, her continual prayer

was “Jesus take me now". Do come my Jesus" then she would ask for patience to wait & bear her terrible weakness till God saw fit to take her I left her at six oclock in the morning, Sister Gannon taking my place, at about half past eleven news came to say to come, she was dying Her last words were “dear Jesus I’m coming". During the night the poor sorrow stricken husband was lead to give himself to Jesus & resolved by the help of God to be a new man from that [indecipherable]. We did all we could in arranging about the funeral &c. One woman whom we had visited very much when she was in great trouble

(being very poor,) often said she would so much like to do something in return for our kindness, she could not give money, but she would be pleased to do sewing for us, any time we wanted any done. We were now able to let her help us, for the three children of this poor mother who had just died, were without dresses. We found a number of her dresses, so after picking them to pieces &c w brought them to her & found her only to willing to make them up for the children.

Tuesday 3rd Council Meeting, vis one convert. Went with Sis Thomson to the S Army Rescue Home to see a woman she had brought their the previous day. Attended Cottage Meeting & made 3 visits

Sunday 8th Sat with a poor young man in the Hospital, who was dying & who asked some weeks ago for our prayers.

Monday 9th Morecliff Hospital Found a young girl from the country who had no home here. & no place to stay at. We got a place for her. So here we think she will be likely to get on well.

Tuesday 10th Vis eleven homes; lead cottage meeting in the afternoon

Wednesday 11th Nine visits, attended Mothers meeting, Class meeting. & lead the open air meeting at Princes St for our Evening services.

Sunday 15th Went to get a woman to come to church & sat for an hour with a poor sick woman On returning to the Hall a message had come from the Hospital from the lad I had sat with the previous Sunday & several times during the week, that he wished to see me, I went after the evening services, saw that he would soon be home He wanted to tell me he would meet me on the other shore Poor boy his friends are all living in Scotland, He new no one here. He looked forward so anxiously to going home in the Spring but

now his words were, I’m going to Mother, but Jesus is going to take me to His Home. He passed away before the dawn of morning.

Tuesday 17th Council meeting. Made a wreath for Tommy & attended his funeral.

Monday 23rd V. Hospital & two sick woman (Mrs Green & Mrs Brown) & visited with Sis Gannon ten homes.

Tuesday 24th Council meeting, received a letter from the man whose wife had died some two or three months, to say his little boy was dead & would I come & see him I found the poor man very sorrowful, but was glad to hear the he had kept true to his vow he had made at his wifes death bed. He told me what sweet peace he had within.

Friday 10th With two sick persons all the morning; in the afternoon we all were helping with the Sailors tea.

Tuesday 28th Weekly Council, the rest of the day was spent with Miss Green. The mother had got me to promise to stay with her daughter all I could & go with her to the funeral.

Tuesday 5th Council meeting. Called on Mr Roades who was in great trouble again. Held cottage meeting & visited a woman in whom I feel very anxious about. She is striving to lead a new life, but her old companions will not leave her alone.

Wednesday 6th Visited two homes & went with a poor woman to Darlinghurst Jail, to see her daughter

this is the same girl who was lost to her mother some few months ago. She has been sentenced to two months hard labour for stealing. The sisters of Mercy had visited her & got her to promise to go [indecipherable] them to Tempie to there Rescue Home when her sentence had expired.

Thursday 7th Helping with the natives all the morning. Visited the Hospital in the afternoon, one poor woman put her trust in Jesus.

Friday 8th This day has been spent with the natives in helping cloth them &c.

Monday 11th Went to the Zoological Gardens with the natives. & visited one sick in the evening.

Gannon & I went to North Shore to help in the School Anniversary in the evening.

Wednesday 13th Visited five homes in the morning, & in the afternoon went with the natives to Mr Vic[indecipherable] at Waverley.

Thursday 14th Shoping with some of the native women. Attended Hospital in the afternoon. God is greatly blessing us here another dear woman, who was in great trouble, gave it over to Jesus & trusted him to help her.

Friday 15th All day of prayer at this Hall. Went between the services with Sis Gannon to see two woman.

Friday 29th Started out early this morning to have a good days work. (so much time has been taken up with the natives that our visiting has been somewhat neglected) visited twenty eight homes & one sick woman. Had one of our best open air services in Hart St.

Opening of the Sisters Home

Monday August 4th 1890

It being the wish of the Committee that each sister should keep a record of her work. Although we have not yet entered upon our regular duty. I want to begin my journal from this opening day.

At half past 2 Mr Taylor met the sisters in the dining room to arrange several matters of detail

Then came the Opening celebrations by Mrs Cowlishaw then the great
