Donald E. MacDonald diary, 1 February-12 May 1916
MLMSS 1121/3

[Transcriber’s notes:
During the period of this diary, MacDonald and his regiment were transported from Egypt (Alexandria) to France (Marseilles) and thence by train the Somme (Thiennes). MacDonald’s entries are brief. He does express some excitement on arriving in France – beautiful girls, pretty scenery and amazing infrastructure. He was promoted to Acting Sergeant on 20 April.]

Goodbye’s a word I hate to say,
Farewell is worse by far
So I have learned a bit of French
I’l bid you Au-revoir
Now don’t imagine this is side,
For that would give me pain,
Tis just because I’m told it means
Untill we meet again
