We went into Heliopolis Music Hall

All men returned from M.E.F. are paraded with a view of returning to our battalion. But hear no further news except that the 4th Bde is at Tel-el-Kebir

No news yet as to our probable movements. Put in the afternoon repairing a watch in dad’s workshop. It rains all afternoon & night & the water penetrates through our flimsey wooden houses & makes things very unpleasant.

Wednesday 5
Write a letter home & generally waste the morning. Go on a short route march with the Coy in the afternoon. March through Matariah & see one of the famous obelisks a small replica of Cleopatra’s Needle.

I found out today that when my name was sent in to go away with the details to join Battn. that it was struck off the list by the adjutant but I could not find out why. We have a very good concert in the Picture Show tonight

Friday 7
Draw P.T. 500 pay & just afterwards get orders to report back to School of Inst as a M.G. Instructor. 9/13 get orders to march out on Saturday morning.

The 9/13 march out at 7 am & I do likewise shortly after. Take my baggage down to school in the afternoon. Dad’s Bn. remove back to Zeitoun from Aerodrome today.

Write letter home. Spend the day reading up work for next week. Meet several old friends back from the front, one is now Sgt. in my place & is one of three old hands left in the Platoon

Monday 10
A lot more Machine Gunners expected in some time today & I am told I will have to take a class.
About 5 pm they arrive in hundreds & the work of putting them into tents & getting them some grub took up several hours.
They are in a bad way in regards to clothing & money.

I am given a squad of 20 men from the 6th Bde M.G. Secs.
The first day is very trying But after getting into the swing of things it comes quite easily.

After the mornings work was over I went onto Cairo to try to get some Bostock Books the afternoon being a holiday
But owing to the wreck of the “Persia" these books are not available.
Everything they cannot find any other excuse for they blame on to the “persia"

Go with dad over to L.H. lines & score a pair of leggings.
The 1st L.H. Regt are to ride to Wardan starting at daybreak tomorrow

After a beautiful sleep we get up & have a look round the town After dinner we go in a gharry round the docks & have a look at the shipping
Nearly all ships are armed w/- light naval guns.
Turn in at 2 am

Same as yesterday but spend afternoon in the park & have a look at the Refugee camp where several thousand Armenians, Albanians & Syrians are being looked after
At night visit a couple of shows & turn in at 2 am

Walk along the sea front during the afternoon
Catch 11.30 pm train back to Cairo

After a very cold ride of nearly 7 hrs we arrived back into Cairo & getting home about an hour later went to sleep till 11 am

Instructors are told of to their squads. The Machine Gunners are divided into 3 wings, No 1 is composed of all officers, Sgts & cpls.
I am given a class of 18 N.C.Os.
Some from A.I.F. N.Z.E.F. & B.E.F. but all turn out decent fellows

Go ahead w/- Description of Gun & put in a couple of hours stripping the gun.
Some of my men have not had anything to do w/- a gun before & every little thing must be gone into thoroughly.

Go on to gun drill today the new hands are very awkward a first but only want a little practice

Strip gun again & start asking questions about the parts of the gun & their various duties.
Make each man explain some part or some part of the principle etc.

Work all day priming the class up ready for their first exam. Most of them are in a mortal funk.
Weather cold & damp.

Description Exam takes up all morning, but I am disappointed at my class, they did not do well at all, but had a hard examiner & used some hard words on him, but better luck next time.
Our Colonel returns from his holiday & everybody glad to see him back

Write letter home in the forenoon. It is so long since I have heard from mum that I find it hard to put anything into letters.
After dinner take dad to the Zoo, & see the new wonders of a hippo & several splendid Giraffes.
Have dinner in Cairo & return at 8.30 pm

Peg away at the care & cleaning subject; the men a very keen to learn.
Have great hopes for them.

First thing exam in care & cleaning & I have pleasure in stating my class had highest average.

Work as usual & at night I visit the Casino Kursaal. The “Revue" is absolutely the prettiest thing I have yet seen staged, the music & costumes & really fine & altogether a show worth seeing.

Instruction as usual, Semaphore exam & get guns ready for range practice tomorrow.
Go & have a chat w/- Dad & play a couple of games of Bridge.

Friday 18
A most distressing accident occurred this morning. An Instructor was demonstrating w/- a Garland Grenade Mortar & live grenade, when by some means the grenade exploded in the gun C.S.M Kirton was killed & 5 others more or less severly wounded.

The whole school went out on an attack scheme in the early morning
After dinner we put in a couple of hrs on stoppages.

Machine gunners go out on a Tactical scheme returning at 8.30
Morning on stoppages & afternoon reviewing notes.
At night I go to see a big old Roman picture “Cabiria" very good.

The short time we have had to put in on stoppages made it rather hard on the new chums.
I am going into the Sgts mess now for our wind up concert.

Early morning we do a little practice in Gun mounting & get our gun & Tripod ready for the standard tests
After breakfast we examine all squads at Drill
After dinner inspection & in the evening I went into Heliopolis for a walk.

First thing I heard this morning was “Cookhouse" at 8 am.
After breakfast we had a muster parade & issue of certificates.
After dinner all men for Ismalia & Tel-el-Kebir march out

After breakfast I wrote a letter home but forgot to post it
After Dinner Dad & I & Dad’s boy went for a run into Cairo & out to Rod-el- farag the Nile docks.
After Tea we went to the American Cosmograph

Monday morning was spent making the dugout more like a home & less like a dump.
I also received a welcome surprise got a parcel from home sox etc. God knows how long it has been coming.
Spent evening w/- dad

I took a long walk out on the desert & fired a few shots w/- my pistol to see if it would still go off (it did)
After dinner I went into Town for a ramble returning about 10 pm tired out.

Wednesday 1
Poke about all morning & after dinner went over to Dad’s & played cards till nine then went home to bed & read a book till 1 am.

Thursday 2
Caught the 12.45 train from Cairo out to Barrage. This Barrage is situated on the Nile Delta & consists of a number of Weirs & Locks & used to regulate the Flood Waters of the Nile in this particular region. The whole is a very fine piece of Engineering & looks very fine surrounded by magnificent gardens,

Having discovered that Jack Davidson was w/- the 1st T.B. I set out to find him & was lucky to strike first try. Very pleased to see each other & had a lot to say about old times
Played cards in the evening w/- Dad.

A large detachment of British West Indies Natives are here this time
I have managed to get a beastly cold.

Muster Parade at 9.30 am
Find again that we have a lot more men than we had arranged for, about 750 Machine Gunners
Had tea w/- Dad & went to Pictures at Helmia camp

First thing we had to sort the mob out, officers, then N.C.O’s. & then all the men in their various units
I got another class of N.C.O’s. & my own gun.
Several units brought Vickers guns about 6 in all.

Tuesday 7
Carry on the good work having a fairly good mob including a Cpl from the Royal Flying Corp.
Going to the store tonight I met another one of my old Platoon now a Sergt in the present 13th Btn.
We are all wearing shorts again days very hot.

I put in a couple of hours extra with a couple of new hands
Have tea w/- dad play cards

Thursday 9
Men are showing a bit of improvement in the work.
We had a rather easy day two long lectures taking up about 3 ½ hours.
Tonight I made another little table.

After tea several of us went for a walk to Zeitoun & had coffee & cakes
Wrote a letter & sent some stamps to Amy Bryant & finished up by giving one of my pupils an extra hours work.

After dinner went along & had tea w/- Dad & go to pictures
Make arrangements about going out tomorrow

As soon as dinner was over Dad & his boy came down & had a look at my “dugout" which is plentifully decorated w/- pictures etc.
Going into Cairo we went on the tram out to “Vieux Caire" (old Cairo) to have a look round

Put the class through a final run over ready for tomorrows exam. All seem ready for it.

After the parade this morning I got two bundles of letters, one from Mum dated 4-1-16 which gave me some pleasant reading.
After tea went & played cards w/- dad & had a long chat about the various things the letters brought up.

Friday 17
Sent off a cable to be despatched to mum. Every spare minute I get during the day I spend answering my letters.
In the evening I went into Heliopolis to get my watch from the jeweller

As soon as dinner was over, at the invitation of several Scottish Horse Sgts, I went to the Army International Football match on the E.S.R.I. ground
After a pleasant convivial evening we turned in about 11.30 pm.
Shortly after 1 am it started raining & came through our roof wetting us unpleasantly

Spent best part of the morning drying clothes & blankets & mating a permanent shelter out of some timber we pinched for the job & a wp sheet.
Have a high tea w/- dad & go to the pictures.

Day begins with the usual “scheme" starting with reveille at 5.30 am, but as soon as the men march out we were free to go back to bed if we wished.
After breakfast we had a long lecture.

Just after dinner dad sent for me He is to be boarded for Australia & we had a nice job sorting out his gear, what he should take what to leave me & what to discard.
He is to be at No 3 General Hosp. at 9 am tomorrow.

Soon after breakfast the men for the new school marched in.
Keep coming in batches all day.
After tea we went for a walk to Zeitoun

Sunday 2
Men continue to come in all day. I was on duty from 12 to 4 pm.
No word from dad.
At 4.30 pm I went into Cairo for a final ramble before starting work tomorrow.
When I returned about 9.30 pm, I found a note from the store to come & get dad’s bag as they were going to Tel-el-Kebir at 6 am tomorrow. I got ‘em.

We have got a motly crowd in this time.
It took us two hours to sort them into squads
I am given 19 men & a gun from the 13th Bde M.G. Coy.

Exam all morning.
After dinner went to have a chat w/- dad & hear that he is booked for Australia to go by the “Karoola"
After that my chum & I had dimmer in Town went for a chat to Patti’s & then finished up at the Kursaal getting home at 1.30 am

Today when I got to the hosp I was plainly told that the men for the Karoola had left at 6 am.
He had telephoned to the school as soon as he knew but no message had been given to me
As soon as I got back I wrote him a letter to Suez.

At dusk sky looks very over-cast & we expect the awful sand winds known as the “Camseen" (phonetic spelling) so called because they continue for a period of 50 days on & off.

The dreaded wind commenced to blow just after sunrise gaining strength all day until about 3 pm it was not possible to open ones eyes.
The sand drifts into every crack & hole making it impossible to keep it out.

Altogether it has done a whole heap of damage it will take us a week to get clear of the dust

My chum to [took] me to a friend to meet am American Lady whose name I forget
had a real pleasant afternoon.
After dinner at 8.30 were on our way to the Kursaal when I met an old chum & we had a regular reunion

Had a sleep all afternoon & went into town about 6 pm. Met Jack Steriker & went w/- him to the Egyptian theatre.
The entertainment consists of two songs each lasting ¾ of an hour & one Can Can dance lasting about ½ an hr.

Were treated to a splendid aviation display this afternoon, a small tractor Biplane looped the loop no less than 6 times in about 20 mins.
Went for a long walk in the cool evening.
