84/18/5/15 Complimentary
Following is copy of News received from S.H.Q under date 16/5/15 "Gen Cmdg wishes to inform the A.C. under your Command how much he appreciates the spirit in which they are carrying out the important duty allotted to them. Sir Ian is fully aware that the operations of the containing force employed in such manner as is the Corps under your command at present are not as attractive as a more active offensive would be but he wishes your men to be informed of the extreme importance of their present role containing as it does a large force of the enemy.

[Page 13]
& proving a constant menace to the enemy Comms. The importance of the gallant efforts of your men is greater far than is locally here apparent & G.Cmdg hopes that before long their Sustained & Successful efforts may be crowned by a vigorous & successful offensive which however can hardly rival in result the splendid stand that they are now making in the Services of their King and Empire."

85/18/5/15 Communication
In continuation of No II issued today attention is drawn to the foll: extract from Cir No 3 by the Dir of 4 Sigs Att: circuits should be seriously treated "13 In the phase of operation when cable lines remain in use several days or possibly weeks every effort should be made to strengthen line. Work should be continued on a cable line laid in the first instance on the ground to convert it as far as possible to an air line, by fixing it up to house trees or poles procured locally. The Cable itself is not to be tied round eaves gutters or water pipes but is to be tied with spun yarn where [Indecipherable] to any object on which it will might

[Page 14]
wear & make earth."

86/18/5/15 Cable Lines. It has been noticed that there are several lines about the Valleys which are evidently abandoned. Signal & [Indecipherable] Units will reel up any lines which they have laid & no longer used. A report will be submitted by OC Units by the 21st May to show that this has been done.

87/18/5/15 Sand bags. The attention of all O.C. is drawn to the fact that Supply of S Bags & Timber Scantlings is not unlimited. It has been noticed that many dugouts are built regardless of the scarcity of these materials. Sinking dugouts instead of building them up with S Bags would set free a large number of bags in many cases a large number of boxes could well be substituted for S Bags in dugouts. The security of the troops in the trenches must come before personal comfort all OC’s should bear this in mind & impress it upon their Commands.

The S.O.C. takes the opportunity of warning all concerned that the in case of

[Page 15]
necessity Ofrs & men will be called upon to give up the S. Bags & timber now in use by them, for anything except min. required for actual protection.

B.088 18/5/15 Bathing. It has been brought to notice that men in considerable Nos are in the habit of bathing S of No 1 Pier. Though there is no objection to few men bathing from time to time as opp[ortunity] offers the men should not collect in any numbers as this almost invariably results in casualties due to the enemy opening Art. Fire. All ranks are to be informed accordingly.

89 18/5/15 Collection of Arms Equip Etc
Special attention is directed to necessity of collecting all arms equip & ammunition from the dead & wounded in addition all G. Coats & books that are in a Serviceable condition are to be collected & handed in to the DADOS of Div. No equipment is to be destroyed except on the personal Auth. of the DADOS it is pointed out that supply of equipment

[Page 16]
is very limited & none should be destroyed that can possibly made fit for further use.

90/18/5/15 Indents for Ordnance Stores & Clothing
All Indents for Ord Stores & Clothing must be submitted through DWO.O. if this is not strictly complied with confusion & consequent delay in the issue of stores will invariably ensue
