Rodda war diary, 27 March-18 August 1917
MLMSS 1208/Item 1

[Transcriber’s note: The diary commences on 27 March 1917 as the ship passes the Eddystone Lighthouse and arrives in Plymouth. Rodda then travels by train to Dinton for Hurdcott Camp. He commences training here and later moves to a camp at Favant. He has relatives in England and spends his leave with an Uncle he meets in London, relatives in Filey and an Aunt and Uncle at Barrow in Furness. He writes of his training in Lewis Guns, bombing, etc. and with friends goes on walks in the countryside around the camps where he is stationed.]

[Page 38]
Forward Movement Mechanism

Action of Return Spring – When gasses have expended then forces the return spring, unwinds, in doing so it rotates pinion & teeth of pinion being engaged in teeth of rack forces piston rod forward.

Action of Bolt & Ejector – As bolt travels fwd. the top face of bolt striking base of bullet & forces it into chamber & Extractors are sprung over rim of bullets – bolt is fully home. Recess on left of bolt face kicks head of ejector into its housing & ejector being pivoted the tail goes into bolt way ready for next backward movement.

Action of Striker post – S.P. being engaged in rear of cam slot carries bolt fully home & when lugs on bolt are opposite the body locking recesses the left side of S.P. bearing against left side of cam slot thus causing bolt to rotate & engages lugs in body locking recess thus locking bolt ready to receive shock of discharge. S.P. continues to travel down straight portion of cam slot & striker protrudes through striker way & explodes the charge.

Action of Feed Arm – As bolt goes fwd. boss on f.a.a.s. travels in under cut groove of feed arm thus moving it from left to rt. into a position to receive a fresh bullet from mgzine. As F.A. moves to rt. the f.a. pawl passes over a projection or mgzine. behind which it engages [See top of Page 37 for end of this paragraph]

[Page 39]
[See last paragraph on Page 40 for beginning of this paragraph] ejection opening.

Feed arm – As bolt moves to rear the boss on f.a.a.s. working in groove of feed arm causes feed arm to go from rt. to left. The feed arm moving from rt. to left assisted by separating pegs & indentations of magazine carries bullet across under bullet guide spring where it rests on flanges of body ready for next fwd. move of bolt. It is stopped from going too far by the raised portions on left of feed arm.

Action of Magazine – As Feed Arm moves to left, the f.a. pawl being engaged behind a projection of magazine rotates mgzine. into position for next bullet; at same time the left stud passes away from right stop pawl & allows it to be pushed fwd. to dble. action pawl spring & it becomes engaged in front of projection & prevents magazine from going too far. At same time left stop pawl is depressed & passed over by a projection on mgzine. behind which it engages & prevents mgzine. from rebounding.

[Page 40]
[See Page 41 for beginning of this paragraph] is passing between gas port & muzzle some of gases go through gas first, through nipple of gas chamber into gas regulator where any hard fouling is left, the clear gases then pass through hole in gas regulator, through hole in face of gas chamber into gas cylinder where it strikes cup head of piston driving it to rear.

Action of piston rod – As p.r. travels to rear teeth of rack being engaged in teeth of pinion rotate pinions & thus wind up return spring ready for next fwd. movement.

Striker post – As p.r. moves to rear it carries with it the striker post which works in cam slat of bolt. For 1st 1½ ins. nothing happens then right side of striker post bearing on right side of cam slot curve rotates bolt 1/8 turn to left thus freeing bolt from body locking recess & allowing it to be carried to rear.

Bolt & Ejector - As bolt moves to rear extractors having gripped base of bullet draw it from chamber. Then the left lug on feed arm actuating stud strikes tail of ejector forcing it into housing – the ejector moving on a pivot, the head is thus forced out into bolt way where it passes through slot on left of face of bolt strikes base of bullet throwing it through [See top of Page 39 for end of this paragraph]
