[Transcriber's note: James Shipman Service Number 1573; D.O.B. 10 Jan 1892; enlisted 29-4-12 discharged 22-7-19.
Shipman is punctilious in respect to time and date, and also the naming of the numerous ships Yarra encounters during patrols. However, his spelling, which is phonetically correct, is atrocious. So much so, that around page 150 the Word program for incorrect spelling notified me that it was turning itself off because of overload! Also, Shipman uses punctuation incorrectly if not haphazardly. He almost never uses a capital letter after a full stop.
Of historical interest, is Shipman’s listing of the Battleships and other vessels present in Mudros Harbour on the island of Lemnos, when the so called Armistice of Mudros was signed on board the battleship HMS Agamemnon on 30th October 1918. Shipman starts to be more descriptive of events taking place around him, once the war is over and particularly when, with H.M.A.S. Torrens Yarra sailed into the Black Sea to visit Novorossiisk. This visit and the later one by H.M.A.S. Swan is mentioned by A.W. Jose in "Official History of Australia in the War of 1914-18 vol ix The Royal Australian Navy pp 328-29".]
