Blankets for Native Blacks

Colonial Secretary’s Office,
Sydney, 12th May, 1848

Gentlemen
In acknowledging the receipt of your letter of the 25th April last I am directed by His Excellency the Governor, to inform you that fifty blankets will be immediately forwarded to you to be distributed to the Native Blacks in your District, and to request that you will transmit a receipt for the same, and a report of the date on which they may arrive.

His Excellency desires me to request, that these blankets may not be given to the Blacks, but that they may be issued to them on loan only, which should be distinctly explained to them; and that you will be pleased also to cause them to be marked in such a way, that they may be known to be the property of Government, in order that any persons improperly obtaining possession of them may be punished as the Law directs.

I have the honor to be,
Gentlemen,
Your most obedient servant,
for the Colonial Society
