To my dearest, Mother, Father, Sisters, & Brothers. It gives me great pleasure to be able to send you this diary my-self and I hope I shall send or bring you all another one for 1917, which we are all looking forward to as the year of Victory.
I am also very glad that I have been spared so long and have been able to put in six months in the firing line doing a bit for the Empire, and

[Page 14]
for all those near and dear to me in Australia (no place like it) What I used to dread was to be knocked, before I should actually get into action, like so many thousands have been,.
But we are not doing anything wonderful coming over here, only our duty, I could not understand why so many voted against conscription in Aust, every eligible man should be over here and there are plenty here that have no right to be.

[Page 15]
Keep this diary in a safe place, as it will give me much pleasure reading same when I return There is no doubt a lot in here, that will not be of much interest, to others whereas for me to look up would bring hundreds of adventures before me.
I know you will like to read this diary. So I am sending same by registered Post while I am here in England.
Leo.
