  • General note

William Dampier purchased Giolo in Mindanao, the Philipinnes, in 1690 and took him to England in late 1691, where he was sold to business interests who exhibited him in London as a curiosity (see Dampier's "New Voyage round the World", 1697, p.549). Giolo was later sent to Oxford, again for exhibition where he died of smallpox. For further information see Geraldine Barnes "Curiosity, wonder and William Dampier's painted prince", Journal for Early Modern Cultural Studies, vol.6 No.1, 2006, pp.31-50
A reversed and smaller version of this print was published as the frontispiece to Thomas Hyde's "An Account of the Famous Prince Giolo", London, 1692. A microfilm copy of this text is in roll 188 of "Early English Books 1641-1700" State Reference Library RAV/FM4/57
Dampier noted that 'Romantick stories' circulated in England which held that Giolo's tattoos repelled venomous creatures ("A New Voyage ...", p.517). These creatures can be seen, fleeing, in the print.
