Administrative / Biographical Note
The W. G. Walkley Awards were established in 1956 by Sir William Gaston Walkley, a pioneer of Australian oil exploration who founded Ampol Petroleum. The W.G. Walkley Awards are awarded annually recognising excellence in journalism. The W. G. Walkely Awards were first administered by the Australian Journalists' Association which amalgamated with the Actors and Announcers Equity Association of Australia and the Australian Theatrical and Amusement Employees' Association to become the Media, Entertainment and Arts Alliance (Australia) in 1992. In 1956 there were five categories of award, all in print journalism. In 1998 there were twenty seven categories of award in a range of media.
