  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    Philip Henry Morton, known as Pat Morton, was elected to Mosman Municipal Council in 1944 and Mayor of Mosman in December 1945. He was Liberal member of the NSW Legislative Assembly for Mosman from 1947 until his retirement in 1972, during which time he was Leader of the Opposition (1955-1959), and Minister for Local Government and Highways (1965-1972).
    The Mortons were a prominent family in the Shoalhaven district. Pat Morton's grandfather, Henry Gordon Morton, was a surveyor for the Berry Estate and also the first mayor of Numba; three of his sons were members of the Legislative Assembly, and a fourth son, Pat Morton's father Arthur Richmond Morton, was an alderman of Nowra and Lismore Councils.
  • Scope and Content
    A. Papers, 1901, 1905, 1912, 1926, 1944-1973, 1987, 1999, being mainly scrapbooks and printed items concerning his political career, and politics and government in NSW, together with personal family papers. The scrapbooks contain correspondence; campaign ephemera for Mosman municipal elections and NSW state elections; invitations and menus; photographs, including portraits, and many taken at bridge openings and other official occasions; newspaper cuttings from the Sydney and NSW country press concerning politics and government, and in particular such matters as Local Government, planning and development in Sydney, land prices, roads, pollution, during the period that Morton was a Minister in the Askin Government. The scrapbooks also contain family papers and photographs.
