Administrative / Biographical Note
Kevin Martin Healy was born in Fremantle, Western Australia, in 1909. Two years later his father returned to his native Ireland with the family. Healy returned to Western Australia in the late 1920s. Among a succession of labouring jobs, he was a shed hand during the 1930 shearers' strike at Carnarvon. He joined the Communist Party of Australia in 1937. In 1949, as Chairman of the Party's West Australian State Committee, he was charged with sedition under the Crimes Act 1914-1942. He was subsequently acquitted after having prepared his own defence. Healy moved to N.S.W. in the early 1950s. He worked at Mort's Dock until its closure late that decade. In 1992 he founded the Ryde Aboriginal Interest Group to raise an awareness of Aboriginal contributions to Ryde City during the municipality's bicentennial celebrations. He is married to artist and peace activist Evelyn Healy.
