  • General note

"Notes of Mullumbimby -- Hugh Livingstone, with wife & family of four & myself (niece of Mrs Livingstone) arrived in Mullumbimby per wagonette & pair horses October 1891, opening a General Store. A short time after the Post Office & later, Telephone Office. The first telegram being sent by Mrs Livingstone early in 1892. The building being situated opposite the School of Arts which at that time was somewhere behind the present School of Arts but was destroyed by fire. These two buildings together with a Hotel owned by Mr McGougan & a cottage where the Oneil family resided were the only buildings where the township now is, all being surrounded by dense scrub. A short distance from them was a cottage where Mr Joe Yates & his wife lived. Travelling along just a bush track where one had to dodge vines & bushes overhanging, the goods for the store were carried per wagonette & pair of horses from Byron Bay, a distance of about 14 miles or with a rowing boat from Brunswick Heads until the steamer bringing cargo from Sydney was wrecked on Brunswick Bar. After the loss of that vessel called "Endeavour" no more came that way. During the early days customers came (at times with a pack horse) to collect their goods & mail, hurrying off to re-cross the river before the tide rose. Later they had a ferry punt & then the Bridge was built. The first building to be erected near the Railway Station was a Hotel owned by Mr Yates. Mr Livingstone then had his Residence etc. moved to a block very near the Hotel which was later taken over by Mr McGougan, his two storey Hotel being used as another store by Mr Cameron & his two sisters. I believe the same building is now the Mullumbimby Ambulance Station. The names below are person(s) shown in the photo: H. Livingstone with pair horses & his wagonette, H. McDermid with horse & cart (Mr Livingstone's cousin); back row: first lady, I have forgotten name, second with baby, Mrs Donald Shaw, Mr William Shaw, Mrs Sanderson, Mrs Livingstone's mother; front row from right: Mr & Mrs Joe Yates, Hotel proprietor (with dog Satan), Mrs Livingstone with four children; The little fellow in white knickers has now served in the two World Wars, Mrs Oneil in dark dress, Janet Manewell (Mrs Livingstone's niece & the writer of these few notes), Janet Thorpe. [PS] I mentioned Mr Yates Building near the railway station. When that place was erected it was also dense scrub but some time later the Railway Station was built a short distance from the General Store & Hotel. At that time they were the only buildings there."

"Mr Bayley, Dear Sir, I received your letter, also one from the Librarian earlier. When writing to you re "General Store" I thought I would be able to explain personally so I do not wish to be misleading but will leave it to you to decide if it would really be termed the "first store", as when first built it was in one position near a School of Arts but later moved to the other site where the photo was taken & there may have been some alteration in the building. The first building being moved bodily by means of bullocks & I do not think the front part was extra but the proprietor & all were the same & no other store was in Mullumbimby for some time. I will give you on a separate sheet what notes I can which I do know to be reliable. I have never written anything of this kind before & being quite a "country person" have very little idea what you just require so if the notes, etc. are not in order just forget they were written. There may be others who could give a better description of early days there. Mr & Mrs Livingstone have both passed away. Hoping the information may be useful & apologising for the rather shabby photo which I will post with this. Sincerely yours, Janet Thorpe"
