Jon Cleary (1917-2010) author, was born in Erskinville, New South Wales. He was educated at Marist Brothers School, Randwick. During the years of the Depression in 1930s, he had a variety of jobs from factory worker, travelling salesman, laundryman to dole worker on the roads.
He joined the AIF early in 1940 and saw service in the Middle East and New Guinea. He started writing during the war and had short stories published in most of the world’s leading magazines. He wrote his first novel, You Can’t See Round Corners, in the last months of the war but lost the manuscript in a cyclone in New Guinea. He rewrote the book and at the end of 1946 won second prize in the Sydney Morning Herald’s first national novel competition.
Cleary has published over 50 novels since ‘These Small Victories’ in 1946. Early in his career he wrote successful, popular novels ‘You Can’t See Round Corners’ 1948 and ‘The Sundowers’ 1952 before moving to thriller novel genre with great international success. He has one various awards including The Edgar Award for Best Crime Novel 1974 for his novel ‘Peter’s Pence’, the Australian Literature Society Gold Medal 1950 fro His third novel ‘Just Let Me Be’ (retitled You, the Jury), the regional prize from The New York Heritage Tribune World Short Story Contest, co-winner of ABC Radio National Play contest and second prize in The Sydney Morning Herald Novel Contest in 1946.
Ten of Cleary’s novels have been filmed for either the cinema or television
