  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Philip Gidley King (1758-1808) was appointed Lieutenant Governor of the settlement at Norfolk Island and on 14 February 1788 set sail there from Port Jackson. He was later appointed third Governor of New South Wales.
This seems to be a fair copy of King's journal (held at Safe 1/16). It has been annotated in another hand and titled `A narrative of the preparation and equipment of the First Fleet, the voyage to New South Wales in H.M.S. Sirius, events in N.S.W. and Norfolk Is., and the voyage to England in H.M.S. Supply.'
(see Mollie Gillen, The founders of Australia; Australian Dictionary of Biography)
