    Drawings - 1 watercolour on paper - 37.7 x 27.5 cm
  • General note

This watercolour is reminiscent of the sorts of images published as colour supplements in illustrated newspapers at the time.
Mount marks around the margins of the work suggest that the drawing was once framed.
The watercolour, with its companion "Aboriginal woman and children walking by a billabong" (SV/89 - you can navigate to this work from this record), appears to be a comment on the impact of Europeans on Aboriginal society. This watercolour shows the effect of Europeans on Aboriginal life, as well as European charity, in this instance provided by a beautifully dressed young woman. The companion watercolour depicts an Aboriginal woman enjoying what appears to be life untouched by Europeans.
