William Redfern, 1777?-1833, pioneer surgeon, came to New South Wales as a convict in 1802, obtained a conditional pardon in 1803 and was appointed assistant surgeon in the colony in 1808. He married Sarah Wills in 1811 and in 1833 sent his son, William Lachlan Macquarie, to Glasgow University, Scotland. His grandson, Arthur George, visited Hobart 1878-1879 - Scope and ContentContains letters from Mrs E.H. Macquarie to Mrs Sarah Redfern; papers of William Redfern, and of William Lachlan Macquarie Redfern including a photocopy of the entry in the examination book of the Company of Surgeons for 19 Jan. 1797 when William Redfern was passed 'Third mate, any rate'(original is held by the Royal College of Surgeons); letters written by Arthur George Redfern to his sister; letters from William Redfern the younger to Dr William Redfern; a genealogical table of the Redfern family, photographs, and locks of hair
