  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    Rev. Henry Nisbet, 1818-1876, was born in Glasgow and served as a missionary for the London Missionary Society in Samoa, arriving there in 1841. From 1868 to 1870 he travelled to England, Scotland and Canada and it was during this trip that his first wife Sarah, nee Crook, died and he remarried Lydie Lantaret in 1870, returning with her to Samoa

    Guide and index to correspondents compiled in the Mitchell Library 39 ff.

    a. Correspondence, 1836-1876
    Includes reports to London Missionary Society, family letters and correspondence with other missionaries, including Rev. A. W. Murray, Rev. George Pratt, Rev. J. P. Sunderland and Rev. George Turner

    Boxes 11-12
    b. Diaries, 1835-1876: Include accounts of voyages from London to Sydney aboard William Lushington, 1840-1841, from Sydney to London aboard Parramatta, 1868, and from London back to Sydney aboard Zemindar, 1870. Also included are accounts of several voyages aboard the London Missionary Society barque John Williams I, a list of her voyages, 1860-1865, the voyages after May 1864 referring to John Williams II, and various other references to the barque's movements
    Diary no. 4, MLMSS 3039 / Item 5 includes a record of letters sent and received, 1840-1867, a list of subscribers to the Reporter and a list of names and addresses
    Diary no. 9, MLMSS 3093/12 Item 3, includes an address to various terms and concepts, 1840, and an index t5o sermons
    Diary no. 10, MLMSS 3093/12 Item 4 includes a brief list of letters sent and received, 1868.
    Diary no. 12, MLMSS 3093/12 Item 6, includes a list of letters sent, 1871-1876

    MLMSS 3093/13 Item 107, originally titled "Sermon or talk in Samoan", is actually written in the Kwamera language (local name "Nafe") of SE Tanna Island in Vanuatu, where Nisbet was located in 1842
