    Drawings - 1 watercolour on ivory miniature in rectangular black wooden frame with oval shaped glass and painted gold edge in centre, backed in black "American" paper, and a triangular metal loop with black ribbon attached to centre top of frame for hanging. - 10.1 x 8.5 cm. portrait, inside frame (sight) - 16.1 x 14.1 cm. (frame)
  • Scope and Content
    The male in this portrait wears a dress uniform that comprises a military jacket of red face cloth and a blue-black stand collar, gold epaulettes, and regimental brass buttons.

  • General note

    Above and below the portrait affixed to the frame are paper labels with handwritten inscriptions possible by a Mitchell Library Officer at the time of donation. The first label has remnants of text, "His Excellency ... Macquarie. Governor of N.. Wales", whilst the second text is difficult to discern.

    This frame is similar to the one used for MIN 70 Elizabeth Macquarie.

    Accompanying the portrait are two non-contemporaneous bakelite rectangular label with black print, "Maj. Gen. Lachlan Macquarie 1761-1824. Governor of N.S.W. 1810-21" and "These minitures were presented by Governor Macquarie to Lieut. Wm. Lawson. In 1928 they were donated by W.F. Lawson, Esq."

    Progress proofs are located at PXA I3 No.4, and a block for the 4th edition of Lachlan Macquarie, Governor of New South Wales : journals of his tours in New South Wales and Van Diemen's Land, 1810-1822 is located at R 356.

    Colour transparencies (35mm) were on sale until 1982. A sample is located at FM5/I5I.
