  • General note

    Untitled
    Unsigned
Originally attributed to J.W. Lewin and dated about 1800, but more probably by Thomas Watling, 1794-1796, according to Dr Bernard Smith's research in 1954. The figures are very close to figures in a Watling drawing in British Museum - Zoological Library - Watling drawing. Dr Smith said then that all the Watlings he had seen had been monotones but that it was quite possible that the touches of colour may have been added later by the artist himself or by another person. An engraving of this view appears in David Collins' "Account of the English Colony in New South Wales," published in 1798. Collins left Sydney in September 1796 and the view was probably drawn before that date. Government House is shown without a verandah in Watling's "Sydney in 1794" (DG 60); here it has a verandah. If "Sydney in 1794" is correctly dated, this view must have been drawn between 1794 and September 1796
