General Note
Unsigned. Undated. Titled from frame label This portrait was purchased by William Dixson in 1929 from Capt. Knatchbull-Hugessen. It was painted to the order of Don Jose de Mendoza y Rios, a Spanish scholar and FRS, as a presentation to Banks. An engraving by Schiavonetti was made from this. After Lady Banks' death the portrait came into the possession of the Knatchbull-Hugessen family. A replica of the portrait was painted for Mendoza and by him bequeathed to the Royal Society. A copy of the portrait was made to the order of Capt. Knatchbull-Hugessen in 1929. Royal permission for dedication of the Schiavonetti engraving of this protrait was granted July 1809. In the engraving Banks is holding a paper on the back of which are the words "The Bakerian lecture for 1808 by Humphrey Davy, FRS".
