ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

William Hilton Hovell (1786-1875), sailor, explorer and settler, arrived in Sydney in 1813. In 1814 he joined a company led by Simeon Lord to trade in New Zealand flax. The following year the brig Trial, commanded by Hovell, and the schooner Brothers, under Captain William Burnett, sailed to New Zealand. At an anchorage which they named Trials (or Trial) Harbour the ships were attacked by Maoris in canoes, probably following a disagreement over the delivery of flax. Several men were killed and wounded. Hovell left the sea in about 1816, taking up residence at Narellan. In 1924 he joined Hamilton Hume on their journey of exploration to Port Phillip. The account of their journey, edited by William Bland, was published in 1831. Hovell lived on his property Grabberdrack near Goulburn and was active in promoting the development of the district.

Burnett, captain of the Brothers, gives Hovell an account of the attack by Maoris upon the Brothers in which several men were killed and Burnett was wounded.
