  Commercial traveller and publican, Stephen Butts has chosen to depict himself in front of his fashionable Macquarie Street residence on his favourite horse. By parading his possessions Butt was making clear - intentionally or otherwise - his position in, and aspirations towards, society. The middle classes would not have approved of such blatant display.
