William Oxley, a miller, was born in 1804 at Rolvenden, Kent. He sailed to Australia in 1839 on the Roxburgh Castle as an assisted immigrant. He was accompanied by his wife, Eliza, a house and dairymaid of Benenden, Kent and their three children. Shortly after arriving in Sydney on 26 March 1839, Oxley obtained a position as overseer of a farm at Richmond. In 1840 Eliza Oxley obtained a position as a schoolmistress. William Oxley died in 1853. - Scope and ContentThe letters (8) were addressed to William Oxley's oldest brother, James, the schoolmaster at Rolvenden, a village near Benenden. They were clearly meant to be read by the whole family. The letters were written from the Isle of Wight (11 Jan. 1839), Plymouth (20 & 21 Jan. 1839), Cape of Good Hope (31 March & 2 April 1839), Sydney (19 July 1839), Richmond NSW (27 August 1839, 21 June 1840, 4 July 1841 & 26 March 1842).
The letters describe the voyage out to Sydney and the Oxleys' lives at Richmond. - General note
