Sir Matthew Harris (1841-1917), mayor and parliamentarian, was born at Londonderry, Ireland, third son of John (d.1846) and Nancy Harris. On inheriting part of his great-uncle Dr. John Harris's estate John and Nancy Harris migrated to NSW with their family, including Matthew. The family arrived at Sydney around 1844 and Matthew Harris was educated at Sydney Grammar School and the University of Sydney where he graduated Bachelor of Arts (1863). Harris was an alderman for Denison Ward on Sydney City Council (1883-1900) and was Mayor of the City of Sydney from 1898 to 1900. He was elected member of the NSW Legislative Assembly for the seat of Sydney-Denison (1894-1901). His son, John Harris, served during World War I as a second lieutenant.
