Signatures / Inscriptions
Handwritten in black in on front of notebook, "Hatful / Nov 1..." "Rodius's Sketch Book" embossed on spine of case for volume. Drawings are titled in ink at lower edge.
The drawings are unsigned and undated. Previously attributed to Charles Rodius, presumably by A.H. Spencer, the bookseller responsible for the hardcover casing of the sketchbook. The date and attribution are derived from comparison with W.H. Fernyhough's, "A series of twelve profile portraits ..." Sydney: J.G. Austin & Co. No.12 Bridge Street, 1836 (Mitchell Library Q 572.991/1A1-5 and Dixson Library Q 83/44-48) from which these drawings appear to be based, though some of the titles and details differ. Other drawings of Nos. 2-6 are located at SAFE/PXA 615 Mitchell Library. Affixed inside lid of presentation box is a paper label, "A.H. Spencer Pty. Ltd. / New Secondhand, and Rare / Booksellers / 86 Bourke St., Melbourne ..." Sir William Dixson bookplate inside front cover of box.
