  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    Thomas Hatfield was a sketcher who visited Sydney in 1838-1839. Identified as "T.S.H", he was also known as "Hatfull" and may be the artist whose surname appears on the front of the notebook. -- Reference: Dictionary of Australian Artists / by Joan Kerr.     Stored in rectangular box with hinged lid and beige coloured cloth cover.

  • General note

    The drawings are unsigned and undated.
    Previously attributed to Charles Rodius, presumably by A.H. Spencer, the bookseller responsible for the hardcover casing of the sketchbook.
    The date and attribution are derived from comparison with W.H. Fernyhough's, "A series of twelve profile portraits ..." Sydney: J.G. Austin & Co. No.12 Bridge Street, 1836 (Mitchell Library Q 572.991/1A1-5 and Dixson Library Q 83/44-48) from which these drawings appear to be based, though some of the titles and details differ.
    Other drawings of Nos. 2-6 are located at SAFE/PXA 615 Mitchell Library.
    Affixed inside lid of presentation box is a paper label, "A.H. Spencer Pty. Ltd. / New Secondhand, and Rare / Booksellers / 86 Bourke St., Melbourne ..."
