			Contents		VOLUME 1 Album of photographs - bound in leather with brass trim and latch. 30 x 23.5 cm. (108 photographs, chiefly carte de visite) Annotated on reverse of cover: `Photo Album of the family, relatives and friends of Sir John Sulman before he left for Australia in 1885. Names inserted at McMahons Point, Sydney Australia in October 1925 by J.S. aged 76.' Album consists mainly photographs of a) Family members, particularly of his grandparents and his parents, and Sulman's wife, Sarah Clark Redgate and her family including sisters Maggie, Mary, Eleanor, Julia and Annie, the Colborne and Clark families b) Professional associates including architects Edwards Potts (later of Potts Sulman and Hennings), J.W. Rhodes (Sulman's partner), Elphick and Newman c) Clients: Soper (William Garland Soper), Buckley (T.H. Buckley), Robert Tuck (Minister of George Street Congregational Church, Croydon), Phillips (also Sarah's physician), Parkinson [Dean of Ballarat Cathedral], The photographs are not arranged in chronological order d) Sulman's friends and acquaintances: Prince (Miss Charlotte Prince, nurse to Sarah and Arthur in Australia until 1886), Rev. Frackelton (whom he met en route to Australia in 1885), Horniman (tea merchant) and possibly related to the Redgates) and others. e) Loosely inserted: i. Silhouette of John Sulman as a young boy, annotated on reverse: `John Sulman born Augst 29th the dear boy now living /[18]64 at present in his 15th year may he be a blessing to the world and a glory to his God his Mothers earnest wish' ii. Mr Horniman Jr in costume iii. Commemorative poem `For our wounded Give, Australia' by Annie E. Sulman VOLUME 2 Scrap Book - Red, bound, back cover separated from main body of book, with gold letterings. 29.6 x 24.8 cm. (49 sheets of drawings on butter paper pasted into book, 1 loose) Drawings and tracings in pencil, pen and watercolour wash by JS, 1870-1873 copied from published sources, mainly of statues and religious sculpture, architectural detail, wrought ironwork, stonework and decorative elements of architecture and buildings in France, England and Netherlands. These drawings were among those submitted by Sulman to the Royal Academy when applying for entry as a student. Although successful, he did not take the offer due to ill health. Sources include R.P. Spiers, Viollet-le-Duc Dictionnarie Raisonne de l'architecture francais du Xle and Xvle siecle, 10 vols, (Paris, 1854-1868), Dictionnaire Raisonne du Mobilier Francais, 6 vols, (Paris 1858-1875) Layards `Nineveh of Babylon', `Transactions, Surrey Archaeological Society, vol 1 Parts 1 and 2, `Homer's Iliad, Flaxman', Zahn's (?) `Ornaments', among others. Sulman borrowed or copied the originals at the RIBA Library. VOLUME 3 Bound Album - Black, both covers separated from main body of album, some loose pages. 43 x 31.2 cm. (drawings on 44 pages, some on butter paper, with 5 loose items) `Scraps and Sketches collected and drawn by John Sulman Architect'. The drawings/tracings and `delineations' were executed by different architectural students besides JS, possibly for the Class of Design and Construction at the Architectural Association, London, where Sulman became a lecturer in c.1870. Some engravings, loose and bound, by architects Herbert Williams and John Brown, among others. The artworks are signed and dated by individual architects and include works by: `TH', J.W. Rhodes, W.E. Nesfield, R. Wilton, G.G. Scott and others. Clippings of engravings/lithographs of English churches are found in the latter section of the album. Some of the tracings done by Sulman have been copied from originals by Richard Phene Spiers, Viollet-le-Duc, and other architects, including `Proposed Infirmary and Workhouse, St Mary, Lambeth', plan traced by Sulman on 28 November 1870 from originals of competitive designs by A and C. Henston (Heuston?), Architects. VOLUME 4 Bound Album - inscribed with `Churches designed by John Sulman while in practice 1870 to 1908' on frontispiece. 47 x 34 cm. Reid Dick who was commissioned by Sir John Sulman in 1930 to sculpt the panel as a gift to the National Gallery of New South Wales. (Cost 1,000 pounds). The two photographs of the model were sent by the sculptor Reid Dick and the third photograph shows the panel as installed at the Art Gallery (c.1931). 11.
