  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

George Armstrong (d.1954), medical practitioner and pastoralist, was the son of Alexander Armstrong who came to Australia from Scotland in 1852. George Armstrong was born at his father's rural property 'Warrambeen Station' near Shelford, Victoria. He graduated from Ormond College, Melbourne, in medicine and in the early 1890s went to Sydney to practice obstetrics and gynaecology. He was appointed medical superintendent at Sydney Hospital. Armstrong maintained an interest in pastoral activities and was a director of various companies which administered family pastoral holdings. In 1937 Armstrong purchased 'Winderadeen' at Collector, NSW, and retired there to breed Corriedale sheep.

Alexander Ewan Armstrong (1916-1985), pastoralist and parliamentarian, was born at Sydney, son of Dr. George Armstrong and his wife Florence Edith, nee Ewan. He was educated at Scots College, Sydney, and then worked on family properties at Albury and later at 'Winderadeen', Collector, NSW. He returned to Sydney in 1954. Alexander Armstrong was elected a member of the NSW Legislative Council in 1953 and held his seat until his expulsion from the parliament in 1969.
