General Note
View 19 The Plains, drawn by John Lewin, and described in Henry Colden Antill's, "Journal of an excursion over the Blue or Western Mountains of New South Wales to visit a tract of new discovered Country, 1815". The entry for May 5th, pp.36-37, describes the scene: "The spot which was chosen for the Governor's large tent was upon a little rising ground about three hundred yards from the men's huts; a small tent was placed on each side with a clear space in front upon which a small flag staff was erected. This was a delightful spot for a town, commanding a view of the surrounding country to a considerable extent...." Major Antill's Journal is available at ML Safe 1/20a (microfilm CY265) Mitchell Library In 1965, this watercolour and V*/Expl/1 were removed from a volume containing Absalom West's "Views 1813-1814" and James Wallis' "An Historical Account of the Colony of New South Wales and its Dependent Settlements, 1821". This volume is available at PX*D 65 (microfilm CY2100) Mitchell Library Previously titled, "An encampment, possibly of an exploring expedition, partly cleared country, officers and men, ca. 1812-1817" "J. Whatman" watermark is visible on paper.
