    "G.V. Brooke / Opened at Melbourne Feb. 26th 1855. Stayed 5 years. Returned to England after 'making' L30,000. George Coppin persuaded him to come back to Australia & he sailed in the 'London' which foundered. Brooke worked at the pumps, refusing to take a place in the boats, but before going down sent a farewell message to friends in Melbourne." -- typescript on the reverse of portrait A.
