    1 trowel - silver, diamond shaped , bordered by wriggle work and bearing engraved shell and swag decoration near the handle. Facetted haft rising to plain ivory and bone handle. - 31.6 x 8.3 cm.
  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    The first bread making plant was at Abel & Company in King Street, Newtown. Charles Baldry Abel, who was born in England and died here in 1930, also founded Marrickville Margarine and Nut Foods of Australia, as well as being a pioneer in bread making.     Businessman Louis Phillips arrived in Australia in ca. 1855 and soon after joined the firm of Moses Moss & Co., Merchants, rising to the position of senior partner. He became a prominent member of both commericial and Jewish communities in Sydney. He acted as Chairman for several companies, invested in numerous ventures, and owned considerable private and commercial property in and around the city. He was several times president of the Great Synagogue. He was married to Clara nee Moss and had 8 children, living at 'Orwell' Potts Point (-- information from donor, ML 353/60).

    Made in 1901 by Walker & Hall, Sheffield (U.K.). Marks: Crown, lion passant guardant, date letter gothic 'i', flag with 'W&H'.
