Charles Grimes (1772-1858), Deputy Surveyor-General of New South Wales, arrived in Sydney in 1791 and proceeded to Norfolk Island. Recalled to Sydney in 1794, he eventually replaced August Alt as Surveyor-General in 1803.
In 1803 as a member of the Cumberland expedition to Port Phillip under Lieutenant Charles Robbins, he led the first party of Europeans up the Yarra River. In 1808 Grimes left the colony and did not return because of events connected with the deposition of Governor Bligh.
This letter was written by Flinders while imprisoned on the island of Mauritius.
