The 77th Regiment of Foot, nicknamed the `Pot Hooks', arrived in Sydney on 26 September 1857, and was the second British Regiment to be stationed at Victoria Barracks, Paddington. The 77th was detailed for duty in Hong Kong, but was diverted to Calcutta to serve in the Indian Mutiny of April 1858. It is not know if Captain Butts was related to Mr Stephen Butts, the rider on the white horse in Macquarie Street, in Joseph Fowles' companion equestrian portrait (DG 251) -- Reference: The Picture Gallery exhibition guide, State Library of NSW, Feb 1999
