- Scope and ContentA west view of Sydney from Fort Phillip, a location just to the south of the present-day Observatory. "Across Darling Harbour on the left is Pyrmont with John Macarthur's windmill. Cockle Bay or White Bay separates it from Balmain. The two post-mills are on Millers Point, beyond which is Goat Island and the Parramatta River. Balls Head lies just past the right-hand tip of Goat Island, and is separated by Berrys Bay from Blues Point. Lavender Bay is partly seen on the extreme right. Millers Point with its two post-mills was then a distinct knob protruding into the harbour. Signature does not seem to be contemporary and is inaccurate as Taylor did not arrive in Australia until Aug 1817. Attributed to Taylor based on its resemblance to pl.3 of his Panoramic views of Port Jackson (Mitchell Library location: V1/c.1821/4-6)

Dated with reference to Taylor's watercolour drawing of the south view in this panorama, in which St James' Church is not depicted, indicating a date prior to 1820. The drawings of the south and east views, corresponding to pl.1 and 2 of the aquatints, are held in a private collection but are illustrated, with commentaries, in McCormick ... [et al.], cited above. Colour transparencies are held in the Mitchell Library at FM5/1210-11; not to be reproduced without permission of the owner.
This is one of four watercolours by Taylor from the same viewpoint, forming a 360 panorama of Sydney. Three were published as aquatints in 1823 with the title Panoramic views of Port Jackson, also known as Major Taylor's Panorama. The fourth, unpublished view, facing north, is held in the Mitchell Library at ML 942. The watercolours may relate to a panorama which was exhibited at Barker & Burford's Panorama Building in Leicester Square in London in 1824.
