ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Francis Greenway (1777-1837) was an architect in Bristol when he was found guilty of forgery. He was transported to New South Wales, arriving in Sydney in 1814. He took on commissions as an architect, and soon attracted the patronage of Governor Lachlan Macquarie who appointed him Civil Architect in 1816. Greenway designed many significant buildings including the lighthouse at South Head, the Convict Barracks in Sydney, and churches at Windsor and Liverpool. He was dismissed in 1822 after demanding a huge fee for the buildings he had designed.

Charles Capel Greenway (1818-1905), son of Francis Greenway, began his clerical training at Newcastle in 1854. He became a deacon in 1866 and moved to Bundarra, visiting other towns in his parish including Inverell and Bingara. In 1878 he was appointed to Grafton, where he was active in the building of Christ Church Cathedral. He became the first archdeacon of Grafton in 1882, and commissary in 1892. In 1894 he retired to live on the family property at Tarro on the lower Hunter. He died in Sydney in 1905. -- Source: Australian Dictionary of Biography, vols. 1 and 4.

Includes memorandum, 4 July 1817, signed by Governor Lachlan Macquarie, asking Greenway to draw up a plan for a fort on Bennelong Point; note from Macquarie, 3 Feb. 1822, asking him to come to Government House; letter to Greenway from Edward Mason, 24 Mar. 1827; autograph signed undated memorial from Greenway to Governor Thomas Brisbane requesting confirmation of a grant of land; letter to Greenway from the Office of Public Works, 13 Jan. 1832, requesting a copy of a plan of Sydney Hospital (pages 1-20).
1814-1822; Letters and documents tendered in 1822 in support of Greenway's claim for fees. The documents are marked as exhibits A to H : Copies of letters to Governor Macquarie, 27 July 1814, 10 Oct. 1821, 1 Feb. 1822; Measure and value of work done by Government men according to the plans of F.H. Greenway, Civil Architect, with autograph letter signed, to his sister, 20 Mar. 1821, at foot of last page; copy of letter to Colonial Secretary Major Goulburn, 4 May 1822; autograph letter signed to S.L. Halford, a banker in Bristol, 7 Sept. 1822; copy of a sworn statement concerning expenses, 12 Feb. 1822 (pages 379-416).

1866-1903; Correspondence. Comprises letters received and some drafts of letters sent. Includes correspondence with his brother Henry, sister Caroline and other family members; letter received from Alfred Glennie of Lochinvar, 1870; letters (2) received from the Ogilvie family of Yulgibar, 1882, undated; letters, photographs and documents received from his godson, Hsieh Shing Ngan (also known as Tse Tsan-tai and James A. See), of the Public Works Department, Hong Kong, 1896-1903.
1866-1895; Documents of appointment to Church positions and testimonials. Includes certificates appointing him minister, deacon and priest, and to various positions in the Church of England, 1866-1895; addresses, testimonials and letters received from parishioners on his departure from Inverell, 1874, 1878, and Grafton, 1894-1895. A farewell address from friends at Grafton, 8 Jan. 1895, includes a pen and ink sketch of Christ Church Cathedral (page 267).

WILLIAM GREENWAY
2 Apr. 1839; Letter received from his brother Francis, at sea in the Brig Harlequin on the way from the Sandwich Islands (Hawaii) to China. Francis gives an account of his life since he left Sydney on 15 May 1831 and laments that he has written often to family members but has received only two letters, one from William in 1832, and one from Caroline in 1835. He writes that he lived for four years in Oahu while employed by trader T.G. Pitman, and is now employed by Mr French. He comments on the improving economy and favourable prospects of Hawaii (pages 11-14).

1925-1933; Extract, made in 1925, from register of burials at East Maitland recording the burial of Francis Greenway on 25 Sept. 1837 (page 21). Papers, 1928-1933, concerning documents relating to Francis Greenway's claim for reimbursement, then in the possession of William O. Greenway and now part of this collection (pages 373-377).
