  • General note

    Titled on reverse.

This is possibly the earliest extant image of the Grand Arch of Jenolan Caves, known in 1861 as Fish River Caves. Painted prior to the period of uncontrolled tourism of the late 1880s, when vandalism/souveniring was common amongst visitors, this image depicts the Grand Arch when it was comparitively untouched and undamaged.

Before the 1870s, when an official guide was appointed, only intrepid or leisured travellers, with sufficient resources to sustain the week or so it took to get in and out, visited the Caves. Thus images of the Caves predating this time are extremely rare.
