In light of Jones' practice as a lithographer, these drawings may have been intended for publication; sets of views of this kind were commonly issued at this time -- remarks by Manager, Original Materials Branch, July 2007
The view of St Andrew's Cathedral in this set of sketches (f.1) is referred to in Jones' entry in The Dictionary of Australian artists : painters, sketchers, photographers and engravers to 1870 / edited by Joan Kerr (Melbourne : Oxford University Press, 1992) as "presumably Jones's sketch of the same title which was lent by Michael Metcalfe (q.v.) to the second exhibition of the Society of the Promotion fo the Fine Arts in Australia in 1849, of which the reviewer on the Sydney Morning Herald said: `Apparently a very highly finished drawing. At first sight we imagined it to be an engraving. The perspective is most accurate ... [but] it is hung so high that it is impossible even to decide in what material it is executed. Is this fair treatment?'". However it is possible that a larger (38.2 x 58.5 cm.) version of this drawing (held at V1/Chu/St An/4) was the sketch exhibited.
