  • Collection history
This watercolour was offered in Sotheby's [London] Catalogue of Sporting Prints, Views and other coloured prints, 16 July 1963, Lot 126. It was part of seven lots, ‘the property of Mrs H.D. Banning’ a descendant of Mrs Elizabeth Paterson (1760?-1839), wife of soldier, explorer and lieutenant-governor, William Paterson (1755-1810). Australian art historian Rex Rienits purchased this painting along with Lot 127 ‘View of part of Hawkesbury River at 1st fall and connection with Grose River N.S. Wales, 1809’. Reference: Anne-Maree Whitaker "Mrs Paterson's keepsakes: the provenance of some significant colonial documents and paintings", Journal of the Royal Australian Historical Society, vol.90, no.2. p.136-151.
  • Scope and Content
Probably depicts the Grose River situated near the base of Grose Head, at the first significant set of boulders near the junction of the river with Burralow Creek. If so, the eminence in the middle of the watercolour is Paterson Hill.
An early interpretation of a wild colonial landscape as a work of art, it is perhaps the earliest surviving depiction of a Blue Mountains view.
