    David Landale Beetson was born in Cuttack, India in 1845. He arrived in South Australia with his parents in 1850. He was schooled at St. Peters College in Adelaide where he showed a love of sketching and poetry, winning prizes for both. In 1869-70 he was a member of Goyders party to survey the town of Darwin and remained in Darwin until 1876. Beeston moved to Western Australia in the mid 1890’s. He died in 1911.

    The album contains the earliest extant photographs of Uluru, July 1889 and includes sketches by David Landale Beetson, a member of the expedition.

  • General note

    The album contains the earliest extant photographs of Ayers Rock (i.e. Uluru), July 1889. It was previously believed that the earliest photographs were made during the Horn expedition of 1894.

    An unidentified pencil note in the album says Frederick Warman was "killed by blacks". Edward Warman was killed by an Afghan cameleer on an expedition with Cockrum in 1901.
