    C. 'Unk' White, black and white artist and cartoonist, was born in Auckland, New Zealand in 1900, but was based in Sydney for most of his career. White spent significant periods on Paris, London, South America and Spain, maintaining a large output of paintings and drawings. He was a war artist in World War II, travelling with the Royal Australian Air Force and the Royal Navy in New Guinea and Japan. With a wide reputation as an acute and witty cartoonist, illustrator, painter and sketcher, White also worked with colour; his water colours being widely regarded. White's personal trademark was a beret and goatee beard. He died in Sydney in 1986, survived by his wife, Nancye, and their son and daughter.
