  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Douglas Roy Nichols was a master of the Ivanhoe Grammar School in Victoria. Although not connected in any way with a seafaring life the collecting of material concerning ships and the sea was his special hobby. He died in 1931 at the age of 39. The collection includes sailing and steamships of all overseas lines associated with Australia, whaling ships, steamships in New Zealand trade, New South Wales coasters, Australian river steamers and Hobart hookers. Although the majority of the photographs have been labelled by Mr Nichols, some, due to the sudden death of Mr Nichols are still unidentified. Those identified are listed in an alphabetical index compiled in the Mitchell Library in 1952.
