    Private L.W. Colley-Priest, warehouseman of Neutral Bay, Sydney, was born in Glebe Point, Sydney. He enlisted at Liverpool aged 24 years, 19 May 1915 and embarked from Sydney on SS Beltana, Nov. 1915 to serve as a stretcher-bearer with the 8th Field Ambulance A.I.F. in Egypt and France, 15 Dec. 1915-11 June 1919. He was awarded the Military Medal for bravery in the field while carrying wounded to Bellewaarde Ridge under heavy fire. He returned to Sydney on HMAT China, in May 1919.
    An abridged version of his diary was published under the title "The 8th Australian Field Ambulance on active service : a brief account of its history and services from 4 Aug. 1915 - 5 Mar. 1919", Sydney, D.S. Ford, 1919. A signed copy is held in the Mitchell Library (940.939/P)
