  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

John Skinner Prout visited Wollongong and the Illawarra during December 1843 and January 1844. He sketched in the immediate vicinity of the township of Wollongong, including its harbour and nearby beaches, Tom Thumbs Lagoon, Fairy Lake, and Lake Illawarra to the south, and Mt Kembla and Mt Keira to the west.
  • Scope and Content
View of Wollongong showing Tom Thumbs Lagoon. Taken from Flagstaff Hill, Wollongong Point, the site of the convict stockade, the view looks west towards Mt Keira, centre, and Mt Kembla, far left.
Prout shows the activity around the port of Wollongong including excavation works associated with the formation of a harbour basin, centre left, carried out during the years 1837 to 1844 by convict labourers under the supervision of soldiers.
The original sketch for this work would probably have been made during Prout’s visit to the Illawarra during December 1843 - January 1844. The lithograph was probably produced at a later date.
It is listed by Brown and Kolenberg as a single issue lithograph titled 'Landscape, Tom Thumb's Lagoon area, New South Wales'.
