George Gilbert joined the Pacific journey on the Resolution in 1776 as able-seaman and was later appointed midshipman. His father Joseph had been its master on a previous Pacific voyage. The journal was written some time after his return, likely to have been written in the first half of the 1780's. The date of his death is unknown but he can be traced in naval records until June 1783.

The original journal is held in the British Museum (BM Add.MS 38530). This version of the journal was acquired from the collection of Sir William Dixson who obtained the copy from Mrs O. Fairfax Taylor. Its provenance before that date is uncertain.
