  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

The Bush Book Club was established in September 1909 in Sydney by Mrs. Ida Withers. it was sanctioned by the Women's Liberal Club (Victoria League) and thus began a 50 year affiliation. The Club was established as an independent institution declaring itself in its aims and objectives to be non-political and non-sectarian.

The object of the Club was to provide general literature for the dwellers in the bush districts of N.S.W. who lived beyond the reach of the School of Arts.

The Club was administrated by general and executive committees, empowered by the members at the Annual General Meeting. Subcommittees existed to supervise "Selection and Appraisal" "Covering and Despatching" and a special subcommittee for "Fundraising". These subcommittees reported to the AGM and General Committee and Executive Committee but do not seem to have produced any minutes (except for the Ball Committee of 1919, 1920 and 1924) and changed their names quite frequently.

In 1937 the Coronation Libraries Movement was inaugurated under the auspices of the Bush Book Club and the Victoria League in order to commemorate the coronation of King George VI and with the aim of fostering a lobe of books among children of the bush.

With the growth of public libraries, general education and the evolution of telecommunication and transport the Club found that its services were no longer needed. A decision was taken to disband in 1959.
