  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Thomas George Brock (1929-1997), rugby league historian, was a lifelong supporter of the South Sydney District Rugby League Football Club and its team, the Rabbitohs. In the 1950s Brock began compiling statistics on South Sydney’s matches. This broadened into an archive on its players and administrators, and the wider game of rugby league, assiduously maintained for the rest of his life.

Tom was a member of the South Sydney District Rugby League Football Club, 1955-1991. His high regard for junior rugby league, a nursery of talent for the Rabbitohs, was reflected in his work on the local schools’ carnival, 1958-1991, and as a member of the schools’ committee, 1973-1991. He was the club historian, 1988-1991, and in 1991 wrote on rugby league for the Weekly Southern Courier. He collaborated with Ian Heads in writing the official history South Sydney, Pride of the League, published in 1994, and in the same year was made a life member of the club.

Tom Brock was a member of the Australian Society for Sports History (ASSH) in the last ten years of his life. He bequeathed his archive, the Tom Brock Collection, to the ASSH which set up the Tom Brock Bequest Committee to administer it and a range of associated activities. The collection represents the finest gathering of rugby league material in Australia and was originally housed at the University of New South Wales Library. The Tom Brock Collection was transferred to the State Library of New South Wales in 2006.
