  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

William Joseph Castell was born in Kilkenny in 1789, son of Peter Castelli, a soldier and theatrical functionary, and his wife, Sophia, a singer and actress. He married Susannah Humble (nee Schliephaken) in 1810. He worked in London as a violinist, violist, double-bassist, pianist and organist. In 1826 he fled his creditors (which included the music publisher Louis Henry Lavenu) by faking his death in the Thames and escaping first to France then to Mauritius and finally in 1833 to Sydney, changing his name to Cavendish in the process. He lived in Sydney at the same time as the composer William Vincent Wallace. Cavendish and his de facto wife died on Australia Day in 1839 when their boat capsized off Bradley's Head during the celebratory regatta.
