  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    “Fanny Maria Lomas Moore [daughter of Edward Lomas Moore] married William Trotter. They had two children, Ella, who married Alick Morton, and Fannie [or Fanny], who married Ramsay Salmon. Ella & Alick Morton and Fannie and Ramsay Salmon jointly built a home Fanella, (a combination of both girls’ Christian names) at Blackheath. Later Ramsay Salmon contructed the Belvedere golf-links on the property. There are a rough plan and some photos of the construction of the golf-links in this collection. Oran Park, Camden, once owned by Essington Moore, Fannie’s cousin (from 1932-39 album). Henry Willis, cottage, Medlow Bath, also of Innisfallen, Middle Harbour.” – Field Librarian’s notes on ML file.

    “Mrs Fanny Salmon, Belgenny, Taylors Square, Darlinghurst, died 20th August 1980 aged 93. Miss D. M. Moore is Mrs Salmon’s cousin … William Trotter was manager of Sweets department store, Newtown. Mrs Salmon’s mother, Fanny Moore, was the eldest of of three sisters: Annie married Henry Willis, who resigned as N.S.W. Speaker in 1913 … The other sister, Lizzie, married Henry’s brother, Frank Willis, and their daughter, Frieda Willis, was a member of the Mitchell Library staff. Ella Morton was Mrs Salmon’s sister …” – information supplied by niece of the donor, on ML file, 1980.

    Photographs:

    36 loose and mounted photographs, chiefly studio portraits, with family shapshots; most identified on reverse.

    Studio portraits include Trotter family; Ella and Fanny with fencing instructor; Alick Morton’s mother; Ramsay Salmon; Flora Eldersham; J. W. Edgeworth David, with signature and date Feb. 17, 1916 reproduced below portrait, accompanied by casualty list in Daily Telegraph, Monday 23 October 1916, where same portrait is reproduced.

    Snapshots include Mr & Mrs Trotter, daughters Ella & Fannie Trotter (later Ella Morton and Fannie Salmon), Alick Morton, family residence Fanella; Memorial Park Blackheath 20.1.24 [three men and a woman in photo]; [postcard print of a woman and three men at a café table, each figure signed below:] F. Salmon; Aug[?] Andersberg; H. Petterson; three photographs of Robert Tudawali and Rosalie Kunoth? with a young baby, Charles Chauvel? in one shot (2 photos have piece of paper with “R. Tudawali” in ink, affixed to reverse, also inscribed “S. Matt[?], 25 40”); [two men and a woman:] Port Augusta 1963, taken with a couple of detectives.

    Student drawing block containing snapshots, postcards and ephemera relating to trip in Northern Territory, 1949; ‘Mrs Salmon’s album’ in pencil on cover. Approx. 50 snapshots and 13 postcards. Includes Alice Springs and Darwin, Hermannsburg Lutheran Mission, Arltunga Catholic Mission, Mr & Mrs Jenkins, Coolibah Station Homestead, Aboriginal woman named Daisy, Rapid Creek Camp near Darwin, Dorothy Pyatt, Aboriginal people at McArthur River Station.

    16 loose pencil sketches: views in South England, 1949, 19 x 12.5 cm. Dated 5/49 and 6/49. Includes sketch of Frieda Worthington home “Kuringai”, Bexhill; unsigned

    Four silhouettes on one mount: profiles of Mr & Mrs Trotter?, Ella and Fannie. Inscribed in ink under lower two profiles: “Ella Trotter, Dresden Vogelwiese, Aug 1 1898, Fannie Trotter, Dresden Vogelwiese, Aug 1 1898.”

    20 postcards of Italy, New Zealand, Northern Territory and Hong Kong. New Zealand postcards include 2 signed by guide Maggie Papakura of Whakarewarewa, 22/2/[19]10.

  • General note

    Fanny Salmon (nee Trotter) is spelled Fannie or Fanny in various instances.

    Fanella, "the well-known country residence of W. Trotter, Esq.", was advertised "for sale or to let (3 years' lease)" in the Sydney Morning Herald, 5 February 1898, "in consequence of the early departure of his family from the colony" (accessed via Google News, 9/11/2012).

    Oran Park, Camden was once owned by Essington Moore, Fannie's cousin. Frieda Willis, a relation who appears in these photographs, was on ML staff and died 1945-46 [i.e. 1946 in NSW Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages online index] -- ML file
