He later travelled to Queensland, having purchased Rosewood Station, near Laidley, and from August 1844 to 1850 he held Bromelton Station on the Logan River in partnership with Hugh Henry Robertson Aikman. In 1858 he sold out and took up a banana plantation at Ormiston, near Cleveland. In November 1864 he bought Maroon Station in the Beaudesert district, Queensland. Prior was appointed Postal Inspector on 6 November 1861 and first Postmaster-General of Queensland on 1 January 1862. When that office was transferred to the political sphere, Prior was nominated to the Legislative Council on 10 April 1866.
