  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Arthur Hall was born in Granville, NSW in 1896. He was working as an overseer on his father's properties near Nyngan, NSW, when he enlisted in the A.I.F. on 3 April 1916 at the age of 19. He embarked from Sydney on board HMAT A40 Ceramic, 7 Oct. 1916 and joined the 54th Battalion in France in Feb. 1917. He was wounded 30 Mar. 1917 and hospitalised with trench fever in Jan. 1918.
During his battalion's attack on Péronne, 1–2 Sept. 1918, Sergeant Hall rushed a machine-gun post holding up the advance, shot four of the occupants, and captured nine others, along with two machine-guns. He provided excellent covering support to his company, and while in advance of the main attack located enemy posts and led parties to deal with them. Next day he rescued a wounded comrade. He was awarded the Victoria Cross for his gallantry. He returned to Australia on SS Devanha, 8 May 1919.
During the Second World War he served as a lieutenant in a garrison battalion before returning to his sheep and cattle property, near Coolabah, N.S.W. He died at Nyngan in 1978.
